How to Break Up With Your Phone.
Ilana Novick, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-02
Staring at your phone doesn't make your more informed, but it will drive you crazy. | Last night I promised myself I would go to bed early. While my body was under the covers at 11pm, my mind was not. Instead of reading a book, as I had planned, I was scrolling through Twitter, getting increasingly nervous about assault rifles, the 2018 midterm elections and neo-Nazis in our midst. An hour later I was anxious, I had a headache, and worse, I was no closer to sleep than when I started. I needed an intervention. I needed, as Catherine Price's new book suggests, to break up with my phone. In How to Break Up With Your Phone, Price isn't suggesting we all throw our phones into a river and move to an alpaca farm. She's not even advocating, as HuffPost founder-turned-sleep. . .

The Council on Foreign Relations' Push Towards a New Cold War.
James Carey | MintPress News | 2018-03-01
WASHINGTON — If you are even a casual consumer of Western media then you know the current top threat to U.S. security according to corporate journalists is Russian aggression. | According to neoconservative politicians such as Arizona Senator John McCain, the Russian interference in last year's election — which has so far only been shown to be a series of fairly banal Facebook ads that essentially just highlighted the organic chaos of the 2016 campaign — amounts to an "act of war." | Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has used similar language, saying the alleged hack of the Democratic National Committee's' email servers amounted to a " cyber 9/11." Even corporate journalists agree with this sentiment, with some columnists like The Washington Post's Karen Tumulty comparing the supposed Russian crimes to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that lead the…

Support the Parkland students at the March for Our Lives. | From Donald Trump Jr. to the Republican Congress, conservatives waited no time at all to start calling the survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School fake. The fake-victim story spread fast and furiously because it's familiar . Alex Jones, who runs the mad web site Infowars where Donald Trump appeared as a candidate, said the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre was rigged to benefit gun-snatchers. After a gunman killed 58 people in Las Vegas last year, scores of videos turned up on Youtube claiming the victims were hacks. The more the Parkland students spoke, the more the Right said they were getting secret shady help — from the leaders of the Women's March. From Democratic donor George Soros. ORRAP | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-02-28
SAN FRANCISCO — A top immigration official said Wednesday that about 800 people living illegally in Northern California were able to avoid arrest because of a weekend warning that Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf put on Twitter. | "What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling 'police' when a police cruiser comes in the neighborhood, except she did it to a whole community," Thomas Homan, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting chief, told "Fox and Friends." | The mayor warned residents over the weekend of large-scale, impending raids by immigration agents in the San Francisco Bay area, escalating tensions between California officials and the Trump administration. | Homan said the Justice Department is looking into whether Schaaf obstructed justice and said her actions allowed immigrants who have committed crimes to remain in Oakland, making the community less safe. | "I just…

Atlantic Bravely Confronts Twitter Insults, Ignores Threat of Decades in Prison.
Adam Johnson | FAIR | 2018-02-27
An opinion piece in The Atlantic ( 2/17/19) takes issue with the phenomenon of people sharing their opinions: "Twitter's socially conscious denizens probably only realized they should be outraged at Weiss after they saw other people being outraged." | Which journalists need protecting and which are deemed expendable tells us a lot about media priorities. | New York Times editorial page deputy editor Bari Weiss–a boilerplate neocon warmonger, anti-Arab racist, and sexual abuse soft-peddler–got into hot water when she sent a tweet last week praising Asian-American Mirai Nagasu (born in California) for being "an immigrant" who "got things done." Eugene Robinson (2018-03-02). Trump's Presidency Is Not Normal—and It's Not Acceptable. Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists The ceaseless barrage of news—both real and fake—from the Trump administration can be numbing, so it's important to step back every once in a while and look at the big picture: Never have we seen such utter chaos and blatant corruption. | None of what's happening is normal and none of it should be acceptable. Life is imitating art: What we have is less a presidency than a cheesy reality show, set in a great stately house, with made-for-television histrionics, constant backstabbing and major characters periodically getting booted out. | Hope Hicks, the White House communications director, decided Wednesday to self-eject. Was it because she spent the previous day testifying on Capitol Hill, and was forced to admit having told "white lies" for President Trump? Was it because the man she had been dating, Rob Porter, lost his important White House position when…

James Carey (2018-03-01). The Council on Foreign Relations' Push Towards a New Cold War. MintPress News WASHINGTON — If you are even a casual consumer of Western media then you know the current top threat to U.S. security according to corporate journalists is Russian aggression. | According to neoconservative politicians such as Arizona Senator John McCain, the Russian interference in last year's election — which has so far only been shown to be a series of fairly banal Facebook ads that essentially just highlighted the organic chaos of the 2016 campaign — amounts to an "act of war." | Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has used similar language, saying the alleged hack of the Democratic National Committee's' email servers amounted to a " cyber 9/11."
